how are the qualifying points determined? is it based soley on your heat finishing position?

I was wanting to announce this over the PA and let everyone know exactly how it works, but time got away from us.

going to be hard to write it down here but I will do my best:

Qual points are all about how you finish OVERALL per round in your class. Not in your heat but overall.

EX: you may win your heat, but then in the other heats 5 people beat your time, so you finished 6th overall. You would then have 6 points. The TQ of each round gets 0 points. Kinda like golf you don't want to have points.

Most places take 2 of 3 rounds and add the two together to get your final points.

The entire purpose of qual points is to make sure someone doesn't TQ with just one fast round, especially whent he track was really fast in the morning and slowed down in the afternoon or vice versa. It rewards consistency.

I hope everyone can follow this and its helps, please let me know if you have any questions.

Travis, Jammie, have you guys thought about maybe having a set number of entries (say 100) and if there are that amount of drivers or over then drop the number of qualifiers to 2 rounds instead of 3 ? The East Coast Nitro series did this to prevent very long days (like VRP). I'm not sure anyone wants to be at the track after 1am. Just asking......

Yea Long days are hard on everybody.
We use this format .. 50 and More drivers- Two Qualifiers
50 or less drivers- Three Qualifiers and slightly longer Mains....Keeps the Race day to about 7 to 8 hrs...

Thanks for the input guys!....Travis and I have discussed the very thing..in fact we are meeting this week to discuss a few ideas and plans about the rest of the year. There was a few things we could have done to shorten the day at the 1st round at VRP. Lesson learned! I guess this is a good problem to have.

Thanks

I know everyone has different opinions but mine is that I race RC and love to do it. So its fine with me to stay as long as it takes. Its like telling a baseball team that 9 innings is too long lets just play 6 innings.

This is what we do so why would we want to cut it short. I enjoy every single minute of racing and being with friends. With that being said, I do see where people are coming from having a 15 month old and a wife that wants me home. But it's 7 races a year, so that means 7 date nights to make up!!!! hehehe

It is a Great Problem to deal with and shows how strong RC Racing in the Southeast
really Is..

Pulled this off some Baseball Site (Not Pokin at you Shannon...!)

"A: The longest game (not double header or rain delay) was 05-08-1984 Chicago vs. Milwaukee, it was 25 innings in 8 hrs 6 min!"

I wish we could keep them to 9 innings...hahah ..100 drivers takes 12-14 hrs at a good pace...

We are training a second shift Scorer now to deal with this great problem we have..
See Yall At Dalton..

Shannon I totally agree, and I challenge anyone that says they love racing more than I do, but the last GCS race i got home after 4am. It was too long of a day, even for me!! That takes some of the fun out of it. Oh and I'll stay as long as it takes, and I run WAYYYY more than 7 races a year.

Round 1 was way to Long even with me living only 45 minutes from the VRP. I'm a "die hard" also and have had several 4 am trips home, however we need to implement some changes to shorten the day when we have such a huge crowd. It's just not safe to send racers home at such a late hour.

I think it had been brought up, but to reiterate. SCT classes don't need warm ups. I think another solution might be too, if the entry level gets high, also cut down pre-heat warm ups to 2-min instead of 3. Just thinking cutting down time anywhere you can to have 3 heats and the long mains as advertised.

Alex who warms up electrics...?
And ,the other classes as soon as everyone has checked in and done a lap or two we start the races . The Clock gives you 4 mins but we usually start within 2 minutes now..

Cutting minutes is great but we have got to cut hrs... GCS round #1 took 3 hrs and 15 minutes per round ( I timed it) and we were moving at a rapid pace...

It was done at the GCS race #1 at VRP. SCT class. Vince, I know you use this rule, but if X amount show up, then cut to 2 quals. Heck, last year, JRBL series in Cali opened with 450 entries! They had to cut to 1 qual and still ended up like at 2AM if I remember correctly.

4 mins is too long, unless you count that from the end of the last heat til next heat start. I was referring to the official clock, when I hear, " You have 3 mins on the clock".

If you cut 2 mins per heat at 14 heats x 3, that saves almost an 1.5hrs. So a little goes a long way. Can't recall how many heats rounds 1 had.

To be honest guys I think its a good problem to have. When we can say we have 146 of the best racers in GA at one event it will take some time, but I like qual points and you can't run them with two rounds of qualifying. If we have more than 115 racers or so we will look into only doing two rounds but I want each racer to get their moneys worth.

I was running the computer at round one and we really only got about a min and a half of warm up, once everyone was running and had made a lap I started the race

Guys I want to make it clear that in NO way am I throwing rocks at the GCS guys (or VRP)!!!!! Those guys do a GREAT job. It is just basic math that I'm talking about, If you have 150 entries it is going to take quite a while to run that many cars. I really enjoy racing in GA with all you guys and I'll be at the GCS races no matter what is decided. I just do not want to see very long days begin to hurt the attendance.

Mr. Cooper,
Its all good, it is what makes RC Racing in the South some of the best in the country...We debate, and excel.. 20 minds are better than one...
See you at Dalton..

Agreed!....This discussion is good...no hurt feelings here. Travis and I are open for any ideas that will make the GCS better. We are going to look into some different ideas about being more efficient with the time.

See you guys in Dalton

Although it is not the only reason, the long race days certainly played a factor in me reducing my racing schedule and eventually taking an extended leave of absense.

Given the growth of the GCS as well as number of classes that are available today (I have no idea what classes the GCS is running this year)....would it make sense to adopt something like the Florida State series (not sure if that is the correct name)?? I believe they run two (2) qualifiers and a main as opposed to three (3). Wouldn't this shorten the race day and maybe allow for additional classes??

Track time, track time, track time, the more the better. (IMO)
I think the guys did a fantastic job flowing the races/quals. all day at Dalton.
If not for a few minor problems at VRP I think it would have been a much shorter day.
More races for the buck I say.
Can't wait till round 3!!!
See you guys soon.
Anybody else gonna make it over to the Bad Lands Spring Sting this weekend?

I'd have to say that eliminating the silent check-in made a HUGE difference in the first round and was a big part of why the day went quicker. Yes, there were less racers in Dalton than at VRP, but even so, deleting this from the program is a great move. 99% of the cars check without issue anyway, so for the one racer who forgot to plug in his transponder, he could get an extra minute to pull in and have his pit man plug it in, while only adding a single minute to the total time of the first round, as opposed to the 4-5 minutes we were adding PER HEAT with the silent check-in.

Brilliant change. Well done.
