I've seen several threads on building buggies, and building trailers. Here is one on building an add-on to the sport we love. Shades of Grey Family RaCing Events is moving forward.
Thanks to Alan's promo coupon post, I acquired 5 Losi Strikes that arrived last week. I bought 6 but one goes to the winner of the CORR class at the 2010 AMS. Since I got the RTRs with a radio each, they came in 3 cases, two to a case. I've only opened one case. There was a red one and a blue one in case number 1.
I also received my tablet PC from Josh35, and got it going, It required several downloaded updates from Microsoft, and XP SP3 is being difficult to get installed completely.
I received my lap counting system from TrackMate in Canada last week also. It requires a serial port on the PC and the tablet I got from Josh did not have one.
I did find an old Dell laptop in my stash with Windows 98 on it. So tonight I got the lap counter hooked up, but ...........

that's as far as I got since after the last race at the Onionpatch, Jared took all our equipment to his house in Huntsville.
I have 6 brand new Strikes, and a lap counting system hooked to a PC and not ONE battery in the shop. Not One!!!!!!!
I've ordered 10 Lipo batteries but I bet it will be after the Chinese New Year before they arrive.
I have to get power to the transponders so I can locate the position to drill a hole in the body. The lap counter works on infrared beams of light and the windshield is not clear. I'm first going to try to just remove the paint and not drill a hole but I'm not good at detail crap like that so I see a hole in my future.
Jared is bringing batteries Christmas Eve so the adventure can continue then, plus I had hoped to setup a small race for the family party that night, but the weather man is saying no to that plan, and my den ain't that big :(

I just hope people see the trucks, rush out to their local hobby shop, buy one, and come to tracks like yours to race.
If one kid stays out of trouble, I'll call it a success. ;)

yea, it is a good thing you are doing. I formed a program last year called Racing with Kids. It was me and a couple other guys that were into RC, but mainly raced fullsize road race cars. We got some help from some companies and put on a couple events along side real races to help promote the hobby and get more kids into something positive. We had a good time, but then things got tough with the economy, some of the other guys couldnt really do it, and we had to stop, but I am still trying to get some people to help me get it going maybe next summer again.
I got into RC at a time when I was getting into trouble with other things, and it really helped me get something to do and stay on track and out of trouble, and that is what I wanted to show others, also a great father / son, or even whole family hobby. I know a guy here that I have helped out alot lately, him and his sone race 1/10 trucks and now are getting into 1/8. He is amazed by how much he spends on it, never imagined, but says it is all worth it for the more time he and is son spend together and how set on track his son is with it....... it is a great hobby, and I hope more people get into it. I would like to start a small hobby shop here with a small track facility, all we have is Hobby Town, and I just want to really make an effort to let more people know that it is something more than just playing with cars in the yard!
I hope everything goes good with your program, and maybe I can help out sometime!!

Got my USB to serial port converter this PM (UPS guy must think it's Christmas).
Found an old receiver battery, and plugged the transponder straight to the battery, hooked up the system, and it counted a lap sitting on the workbench after I changed the software setup to use the correct port number. One step closer.
Now, I can located a place to mount the transponder in the Strike, rub some paint off or drill a hole.
Lap counter receivers mount overhead on a bridge, 22" from the ground. I plan on getting a piece of that vinyl that is used on fencing, slipping it over a 2 x 4, and mounting the receivers underneath. I have 4 receivers that are supposed to cover 5' of track. They sent Cat 5 cable that plug between each receiver. There is a 10' serial cable from the PC to the decoder, then a 20' Cat 5 cable from the decoder to the first receiver on the bridge.
Wish I had a Lipo for the Strike :(

Haven't got a lot accomplished over the holidays, been fighting an athletic nose, and coughing a bunch.
I did get the other 4 batteries charged and they all seem balanced and fine. Now I still can't run the trucks because of connectors. I forgot the bats came with bullet connectors, and the Strikes have EC3s.
I ordered EC3s and they are here, so who is up for a soldering party? It's like a Tupperware party except all you get is a race after the solder cools :)
I hope to build the loop bridge today if the shop gets warm enough later.

Made a quick trip to Gardendale to Radio Shack for solder, got back and started the battery attack. The wire on the batteries was at least twice the size than would fit in the EC3 connector so I had to trim em, and I quit after two batteries. (anybody got a trick for this?) If you decide to try this at home, please use a 40 watt iron, not a 25 like I have.
Made a temporary 8' bridge, mounted the transponder in Truck #37, removed the paint in the middle of the triangle on the hood with a Dremel rock about the size of a nickel, and waited, and waited, and waited... you see Josh35s tablet PC was installing XP SP 3 for the third time. So after about an hour, I drug out the old laptop with W98, hooked it up, and had success driving the truck under the bridge and recording laps.
So far so good, we'll have to see what happens on rough terrain at lap speed, instead of a smooth concrete shop floor.
ps It's difficult to solder when your nose is dripping on your work.

How are those ec3 ? Connectors. Mine came with a deans plug. From the guy I bought it from used. I know I looked at how you put a traxxas connector together and was like woh there. Gimme a deans plug. I got a great solder station but it over at jasons. But yeh the higher watt is good don't have to hold it there as long. Which isn't good to do.

We put a dean's on the Racing Strike Jared ran because we had changed all our bats over dean's on the sc10. The EC3 are not as hard to solder because the connector has a cup on the end that you tin, then tin the wire, and join. No heat shrink needed. Just have to be neat and not get solder on the outside of the connector so it will clip into the cover. I'm not sure of the connect when plugging the connectors together, they didn't click.
I forgot to mention that the Trunigy bats are a hair too big to fit in the Strike without modification to the truck. Just have to clip the tabs on the underside where the esc sits.

thats good to know about the ec3 plug ...do you use flux ...the flux based solders dont have near enough actual flux in them ..i always use an extra small drop of flux at either end ..it makes it less of a chor to solder that stuff up ....do you run your battery all the way back ..im gonna run mine dead in the middle ...

As I said the bats are a little too big, and I have to take a screwdriver and pry them under the box in the back so I'll be running them completely to the front. Tomorrow I plan to remove the box in the rear and see if I can put washers under the screws to lift it a bit.
No flux used.

I got 4 of the 5 trucks ready. Had one that gave me a little trouble binding with the radio, the others came bond just fine.
Here's my routine with each new truck:
Remove from box, and get the goody bag out (Oh each cardboard box had 2 trucks and a neat poster).
Open the shipping box and remove the entire truck, place against the tool bench wall with the bottom facing out.
Clip the 2 tie wraps holding the truck, and the 2 on the radio.
Had to re-glue the support under the truck packing platform, I plan to transport the trucks in their original boxes until the boxes tear up.
Put the batteries in the radio, and the truck, and test the binding.
Remove the right rear wheel and bottom shock mount (not happy with having to do this to get to the spur & pinion. It would slow down a pinion change in a real race).
Check mesh, and motor mount screws.
Reinstall wheel and check all screws and nuts.
Remove 4 screws holding the rear box where the ESC is mounted, cut a washer from the plastic strips used in shipping to hold the tiewraps and install under the front screws. This will allow for the large hardcase batteries to be used. Reinstall the screws.
Mount the transponder in the front cavity of the chassis, noting the last two digits of the number, plug the wire into the front bin of the receiver. Turn on the truck to test for a blinking light on the transponder.
Place numbers from the cut sheet in the battery box corresponding to the transformer digits.
Remove the truck battery, and reinstall the battery holder.
Use a Drimmel grinding tip in my drill press to remove the paint from underneath the hood the size of a nickle above the transponder.
Place numbers on the roof over each door.
Place the truck with the body installed loose back in the shipping box.
One more to go, then build towers for the loop bridge.

Delivered the Strike to Alan that will be going to the winner of the CORR class at the 2010 AMS. It's new in the box Alan, no scratches please :)
Truck # 5 setup and ready. 3 Blues and 2 Reds finished and RTR.
Got the towers built to support the LCB (lap counting bridge). Any ideas on how to paint it, wrap it, or otherwise dress up an 8 foot pine 1 x 2 ? I'm graphically challenged.
ps Congrats to the UA family, now hush please for a few years. :D

Do you mean a vinyl type tape? I was thinking about looking for something like a vinyl channel like you slip over a 2 x 4 for backyard fencing only smaller.
I leaning toward the usual checkered flag look I guess, but I don't like normal.

If you have looked at my website, I hope you understand my mission. I think this is a great sport to get families outside and "playing"together. There is an added benefit for tracks, and hobby shops, to my efforts.
It seems most folks got interested in the sport because they simply saw a truck.
Last night Jared & I spent a long time discussing an idea he had, and I want to run it up the flag pole to see if track owners might salute it.
What if we pick a normal scheduled race at your track, get fliers printed to promote the race, do emailing s, and generally get the word out, outside our race community that a race is happening.
Advertise that part of the race day is for newbies, we will have 2 or 3 "rental" 5 minute races for folks that don't own a truck. I would supply the trucks, batteries, etc, for a small fee to the renters and provide a prize or two. Even supply my own timing system.
Hopefully they will run to YOUR hobby shop, buy a truck, and become a regular part of our good times.
Please let me know what you think, both racers, and owners.
Thanks,

Had a good discussion this AM with John from MadMaxx. He seems to like this idea, and is more than willing to give it a try. If you have not seen his post on Trinity, he plans to upgrade his track and race this year. (Shady, we will need the trailer soon, I'm loaning him the tractor for a while.)
He agreed to host the initial track test of a SOGFRE with the full setup. The first tests will be conducted in my driveway and back behind the barn on gravel on the 23rd of this month (weather permitting). The track testing will be soon after I hope.
On a side note, I received my order of "checkered" stuff today. Even if it rains this weekend, I can get the bridge decorated and the ramps built. Sure was a small box of stuff for a 100 bucks :)

Progress is progress no matter how small:
Covered the bridge and towers with the checkered tape, but I'm not happy with the results. It's ok, but Shag was right, something in a shrinkwrap would work better.
Cut 2- 4' x 8' panels to 4- 4' x 4' for the jumps. I have aluminum angle for 12" legs, with a 3" clip to bolt to the board, so the legs will fold under. I got them drilled and ready to mount to the boards. I'm also going to slot a hole in each side of the boards for easier carrying.
I had planned to setup the bridge, set trucks around and take a picture or two, but as soon as I got the shop door up, it started to rain.
I had rather be playing outside in the mud at the Colonel's. Good luck Al guys! I hear they're all in the hunt.

6:55 Loaded lap counting software on a backup laptop. That makes 3 systems available (be prepared when you GET OUTSIDE and PLAY) .
7:20 Drove over for a biscuit and to survey the area for a parking lot to use in case MM is muddy.
8:15 Received a message from a team driver that his local Rules Committee needs his presents at the morning matters meeting. See how team owners have to hear so many lame excuses. He may still be able to attend the afternoon track testing. He also has requested another test driver to join him to address the matter. If need be, I'm going by the local mission store and pick up some locals since they can drive as well as my team testers.
8:30 The waiting begins, Testing starts at 10.

Had a great day of testing, Shady was on hand with his son, so we didn't miss the cookster at all. (Well maybe a little.)
Had a few issues, and I have a few improvements to make:
Move the transponders closer to the hole in the body. After several attempts we determined that the beam was wider than the hole it was shooting through.
The test drivers convinced me that the bridge towers have to be more secure.( It is aggravating when the bridge is on the ground :) (they knocked it over every race almost.)
Had a couple of batteries that need new solder.
Other than that, all went well, and SOGFRE is still a go.
Jared has the video so who knows.

Got all the transponder adjustments made yesterday PM. I took foam insulation strips and raised the transponders up about 3 inches.
Got the 3 batteries resoldered that gave us issues so we are ready for another test.
This time we are going to a public place and draw some attention.
Thanks again Jason, Jordan, Jared and Halee. Even 4 year old Abby drove some.

It's time to put up or shut up, but I'm not nervous. We now have 3 tracks willing and more than able to allow SOGFRE rental racing.
Many thanks to John, Bradley, and Joe. We will be setting dates for June or so with all of them, posting flyers, and getting the word out.
With all the tracks firing up, I hope this helps attract the locals and fills the classes for all racers.

Z,
Small tip on the apron, put it on, get it adjusted then put a stitch in the lower part where the string comes out (both sides). It will keep you from pulling the entire string out by accident when it's loaded with tools, and you try to pick it up by the neck strap :(

When: April 10, 2010 10AM - 3PM
Where: CityFest 2010, Pinson Al
Why: Advertise SOGFRE and RC RaCing
What I plan is to setup my tent and trailer, display my trucks, and talk a lot about the sport we love, maybe Jared will fire up the Losi to attract a crowd.
Racers: If you want to participate, please bring your buggies/trucks and a chair. I will only have a 12 x 12 booth to display our wares.
I will have SOGFRE flyers to hand out plus AMS 2010 flyers (if it's ok Alan?).
I will have PCs setup running racing videos.
I would like track flyers from the tracks that have agreed to having rental races, so TRACK OWNERS:
please send me any old flyers you have that I can modify (word doc or whatever you have) or just send me your logo and I'll make a simple flyer advertising your schedule for 2010.
Send to cliffw@sogrc.com
Any other ideas are welcomed.

We had lots of interest at CityFest. Mostly kids wanting to drive the trucks.
We did have 3 dads with their sons that expressed a sincere interest in racing. A couple already owned ERevos.
Not one person we talked with knew that RC racing existed or that there was a track 6 miles away.
Thanks Jared and Abby for making it a success. I could not have done as well without a driver and a cute hostess to hand out the fliers
One guy needed his two MTs made into one in race shape so I .put him on Alan.
I am twice as tired today as I have ever been after a race day.

SOGFRE is preparing for the BIGGEST race ever in the Southeast if Not the US, heck maybe the World.
The AMS is June 3-5 at the Cullman Agricultural Center. It is FREE admission to the public so no excuses for not joining us in a family friendly enviroment. Did I mention FREE to the public?
This race features 450 racers from all over the World!!
Your FREE admission includes a PIT PASS. Walk through the pit area, grip and grab the hand of World Champions right here in Alabama!!!!! Don't be shy, asking them to sign your hat or socks, whatever you got.
The #1 Race Director in the country will be on the PA providing exciting descriptions of the action taking place and keeping you in the know.
This HUGE event will be broadcast WORLD WIDE @ www.LIVERC.com so your relatives in Ireland can catch you waving your "GO ADAM & RHONDA" flag.
Racing start at 7:30 AM all 3 days and goes longer than you got to stay if Mama catches you.
Be There!

Z,
We had set our sights on going to TX in Nov. for the RCPRO, but the timing ended up bad for the qualifying races. I decided at the WIN after talking to a guy from Dallas that the Monroe race would have to do for this year as our "BIG" trip of the season.
With the new one in the oven, it looks like we'll be slowing down next season. So we are trying to get in what we can this year.
I will have more time to get SOGFRE going, too.

Another Great RaCe Weekend.
Track - Excellent, most racers I ask said it was better than the AMS as far as the layout. It was the "other" track voted on before the AMS, and both tracks were winners!
Surface - Blue Grooved and well kept.
Schedule - Great! No getting up a the crack of dawn or not sleeping because of racing at midnight. Us old folk like that :)
RD - Very good, a bump or two in the beginning, but he hit the schedules, and kept it moving. The Jlaps top 3 sign was very cool too. I just need a big screen like the pit monitor and even I can keep up with the action.
Food - Good enough for this fat guy. Keep it simple, and keep it coming.
Competition - No huge run-a-ways, more than one race decided on the last lap.
Sponsors - Just right

Thanks to Cliff at SOGFRE (Shades of Grey Family Racing Events) for providing rental trucks for this race!! We are still working out the pricing, but it will be very reasonable. So if you don't have a SC truck, or there is a kid in your neighborhood that may be interested then you can bring them out and let them race on the cheap!!

There was a classic car or two in the lot, so I had to ask "Where's the Car Show?" Answer, local church up the road, then Sonic in Trussville tonight. End of the show season is next weekend, April Fools to Halloween she said.
Then it hit me, so I ask if I could bring my trailer, and show them my RC wears. They thought it was a great idea. So, the old cars can draw a crowd for me to introduce folks to RC.
Seems like a good fit. Wish I had a local race to advertise (John are you listening? :)

See you in Helena, 12 noon until 8PM.
Looks like I'm going to have to change my signature slogan from OUTSIDE to just OUT because WHR is INDOORS.

Yes, I screwed up, now help me out.
In haste to install a tire on a Strike at SHARC last race, I put a front tire without an outer bearing on the rear of the truck. I also used the wrong lug nut (larger OD but right threads).
Without the bearing, the lug nut is now recessed into the wheel to the extent, I can't get a wrench on the nut. It is a nylon locknut. I drilled out the nylon trying to get a grip on anything to turn the nut. I even took an old socket, and burred the edge to use as an extractor but that just cleaned out the nylon more.
Any ideas of what I should do? (no, Cookie, I will not throw the truck out and buy whatever your truck of the week happens to be :)

For the new racers out there or anyone just thinking about it GO SEE
Warehouse Raceway Hobbies.
Alan Burton has put together a top notch place to learn the sport. Everybody there will help you anyway they can, and welcome new racers with open arms.
Family friendly, wheelchair accessible, good ventilation, and plenty of place to tailgate for a full day of racing action.
If you see a "CLICK" happening, just jump in the middle, and add to the good natured ribbing.
Look for the BIG black SOGRC trailer, and say Hey. Jared and I are the founding members of the Men of Magnitude Crew, but gentle spirits just the same.
Come on out for the most fun you've NEVER had.

Oh you mean a clique. Must be a dictionary gap in your house!
I thought you might be refering to those Strike transmissions that are giving up the ghost.

I thought I might break that race down for you from the eye of a geezer:
Psycho - in every way, the track was HUGH, the jumps HUGH, the whoops HUGH. Even the dirt was psycho, making ruts and gullies enough to know it was OFFROAD racing. The promotions during the event, the camera's, the vids, the PA, all off the hook. Even that old man in his football stance on the starting line was psycho (yes, it was me).
Nitro - Good ventilation, not HUGH dust, making the nitros shut off during Electrics, all good stuff. It's hard to control 300+ psychos in a barn that size.
Blast - The restaurant on site was just that, the ribeye steak was one of the best I had anywhere, and I've had more than one. The racers from all over, smile and at least nod, and say Hey to everyone. The Pros help and advise was outstanding with easy access.
I have but one suggestion for next year, move the scoring display up to the top of the fence as the psychos in waiting all stood in front of it, blocking the view.
Great job Ollie, and Dave!!!!

For 50 bonus points, who is in 11th place?

Yep, when Drake's transponder misses 5 laps, it will have an effect on his qualifying.
Nice try though. And I'll let someone else win the 50 points.

We can use it to point out to all the newbies, even the Pro of Pros can have problems.

The SOG Lap Towel
An especially designed towel to fit your lap while working on your truck:
Big pockets on the end to hold your stuff and a special surprise in the middle to stop screw loss from the fat fingered fumbles.

We just found out that the new grandbaby Aaron will be here Monday about 7AM!!!
Since he will not be ready to race for awhile, I'm looking for anyone interested in handling the SOGFRE Rental fleet until we can get back on board.
Just keep one or more of the Strikes running, I'll supply parts, and make a buck for yourself.
Email me at cliffw@sogrc.com if interested.

This is the release of the next SOGFRE product. We at SOGFRE are excited to bring this product to the RC community. I think everyone will agree there has never been anything in RC like this one.

Since the Entabulator was a near miss, maybe this one will be more to your liking.

The AMS 2011 was again out of sight.
The food was spot on, and the race direction was great.
As to the SOGRT, we got 2 Bs, and a C so that's a passing (or got passed) grade.
Great job Alan, and crew.
